After a lengthy investigation, the 59 Hoover members were indicted by a grand jury in Howard County on Wednesday, March 2.
Jeremi Lewis, who was charged with first-degree murder in the case of Jaden Ealy, was a leader of the group, the indictment says.
The other members indicted are Anthony Jenkins, Daquan Woodson, Justin Harper, David Wainwright, Jr., Terrence Hux, Tavon Hawkins and Antonio Haywood, authorities said.
Howard County Police launched an investigation into the gang in late 2020 after realizing most of the serious crimes in the county were carried out by members of the same group, they said.
The indictment further suggests that "59 Hoover" was trying to establish dominance in the area and control various territories. It is also believed the members sold illegal drugs to finance their operations and used guns to partake in violent acts to safeguard their activities.
“This crime reduction strategy brought together detectives and officers from different parts of the agency, with different expertise,” said Police Chief Gregory Der. “We expect that taking these violent offenders off our streets will have a real impact in our communities.”
HCPD partnered with the State Attorney’s Office to launch multiple efforts, which ultimately led to the indictments.
